The word “Foursquare” is an old English word meaning “equally balanced, established and enduring”. For the Foursquare church it represents the four-fold ministries of Jesus:

It was the evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, born in 1890, who founded the Foursquare Church. She experienced a profound religious conversion at the age of 17 and began preaching across the United States and later, the world.

In 1918 she established her base in Los Angeles where in 1923 the 5 300 seat Angelus Temple was dedicated. This church became the centre of her revival, healing and benevolent ministries. She summarized her message into four major points that she called “The Foursquare Gospel” and in 1927 she founded a denomination called “The Foursquare Church”.

After the death of Aimee Semple McPherson in 1944 it was her only son Rolf K. McPherson who became president of the denomination, a position he was to hold for 44 years. In 1949 the number of churches had gone from 355 to 521 and at the end of his time as president there were a total of 19 000 Foursquare churches in the world.

Today there are almost 60 000 Foursquare churches and meeting places in 144 countries.

In France, having become a probationary member of the Fédération Protestante de France on the 29th November 2003, the UEPFF became a full member on the 10th March 2006.
